NearBG is built and run by one independent developer — the same person behind the whole Near family of tools. There is no company collecting data behind it and no growth team optimizing for engagement. The project exists to prove a simple point: small, single-purpose web tools can be genuinely useful while respecting your privacy completely.
NearBG removes the background from a photo entirely inside your browser. Drop an image and an on-device ML segmentation model (U2Netp, about 4 MB, downloaded once from our own domain) cuts the subject out and hands you a transparent PNG — with a manual touch-up brush for edges the model missed. Your photo is never uploaded, to us or to anyone else.
Because your device does the computing, our cost per photo is zero: there is no server farm to pay for, so there is nothing to meter and no reason for accounts, watermarks or daily limits. The site is funded by ads that load only after you consent, plus clearly labeled affiliate links. If you reject ads, every feature still works exactly the same.
The page ships a strict Content-Security-Policy (connect-src 'self'), which means the browser itself refuses to send your image data to any server — ours included. “We don’t upload your photos” is not a policy sentence you have to trust; it is a technical property of the page you can verify in your browser’s developer tools.
